Nitrous oxide, sometimes called “laughing gas,” is a safe and gentle option that can help children feel more relaxed and comfortable during dental treatment. It is breathed through a small mask placed over the nose while your child remains awake and able to communicate with our team.
Nitrous oxide works quickly and can be adjusted throughout the appointment based on your child’s needs. Once treatment is complete, your child breathes oxygen, and the effects wear off within minutes.
At Little Roots, we consider your child’s age, comfort level, medical history, and treatment needs when determining whether nitrous oxide may be helpful. Because nitrous oxide is also a greenhouse gas, we use it thoughtfully and only when it provides a meaningful benefit to your child. Our equipment and clinical practices are designed to minimize unnecessary release into the environment while keeping your child’s comfort and safety at the center of their care.
This page describes clinical care in general terms and is written for parents. It is not advice about your individual child.
